7/16/93 Mann Music Center, Philadelphia, PA Thanks for the tapes, PickyBastardMan. Opening standard. "Jerusalem City
of Gold" is chanted in the pre-Nirvana segment (see also 6/30/94 Richmond). This is a very unusual version of JCOG, fwiw.
I've never heard one with all of this melodious humming in it, not to mention the additional verse.. oh yes I have. Forget it. This is
the whole shabang. The harmonies are fairly strained, but Mike does a pretty good job. Nice leap back into the gorgeous
pre-Nirvana segment. Nirvana comes very shortly, at 7:28. Page's playing is delightful! Mike's solo-section is funky and phaaat
and reasonably melodious, but not unduly impressive. The pre-charge segment is pretty crazy, and sounds a little shaky, but
Trey's first shot at the Note was magnificent, and his jamming around it was sweet. The second shot at Note is also hit
flawlessly and then jammed about. This was the longest pre-Boy opening segment of YEM that I have ever reviewed (so far),
given the extended Jerusalem City of Gold. "Boy" at 10:49. Fish picks up the beat just a notch, and the WUDMTF chants seem
a little rushed (by about a half). Good segment with niiice Page. Tramps segment at 12:50 or something, and Mike is strongly
signaling the tramps turns. Page jams well, but nothing unusually profound from him. He's fairly patient. At roughly 14:16 or so,
the jam segment begins, with Page low on the 'doc repeating a very hard-rock-sort of theme over and over. Sounds cool, but
doesn't really grab me until around 15 minutes or so, when he appears to begin to get more melodious. At around 15:26 or
something he starts quickly repeating this little theme, and given the accompaniment from the others, IT JUST ROCKS, imo!
=^] Trey is still low on the 'doc for the most part, until around 16:10 or so when he finally breaks out into the Oye Como Va
style of YEM soloing (but he doesn't tease Oye Como Va). Jam really GLOWS in here (16:40), with wonderful
accompaniment of Trey's powerfully gripping soloing from Fish, Mike and Page. A very good conclusion to the jam segment,
with some extremely fiery Page (just NAILING the damn piano!!!!) and some OUTRAGEOUS Trey!!!! They keep dragging
out the ending to this sweeeeet YEM!!!!! NIIIIIIIIIICE!!!!!!! Trey JUST MADLY WAILS AWAY for the final minute or
so!!! At 18:10 B&D kicks in, and Mike is, at first, steady and slow.. and reasonably melodious. At 18:40, though, he breaks
out funking away, with Fish accompanying cautiously (limelight is all Mike's in here). Mike's soloing effectively tells the story of a
somewhat out-of-luck .. oh forget it. Not unusually exciting, imo. Closing WUDMTF segment at 19:33. Vocal jam isn't terribly
engaging.. I don't feel like going into detail (it is very repetitive and harmonious, but there's nothing special about it imo). There
are some noises in it, though, that sound similar to that part of "Daniel Saw the Stone" in which they make those "BAWK
BAWK BAWK FUCK FUCK FUCK" sounds... Total time 23:40. This YEM was _REALLY_ awesome, in my opinion. B+
rating. two cents charlie
